Road trips, vacations, and adventures.

Week 27 – Tombstone, AZ to Apache Junction, AZ

March 18, 2005

Today was a slow start – and headed out towards Tombstone at about 10:30 this morning. Tombstone is in the process of having a celebration – which means that in addition to the usual tourist glitch – there are many people around in period costumes. This combined with Tucson’s part in Basketball’s March Madness there were many people around (losing teams supporters could be seen in their team colours).

Week 26 – White City, NM to Huachuca City, AZ

March 11, 2005 –

Drove the two and a half hours north, through rural Texas (read – largely unpopulated) – into White’s City. As the area became more and more arid – and the cactus became more plentiful and varied in species – we were even able to see our first live Roadrunner. The short cut (back road) over to White’s City was a bit of a challenge – with cattle guards – and livestock at large – and a 55 MPH speed limit – on a 1 1/2 lane road.

Week 25 – St. Martinsville, LA – Fort Stockton, TX

March 4, 2005 –

Up early this morning to take the RV into Lafayette to have the window repaired. After dropping the vehicle off – went back to St. Martin Lake to do a walk around the rookery in the daylight. Walked for about 2 1/2 km around the road looking at and taking pictures of the birds. Mickey was able to see the yellow crested night heron that he has been looking for the last several weeks – unfortunately they are a bit shier than the other birds and did not nest as close to the pathway. The locals all go there to try and see the alligators – and although several people were excited when they saw one – and tried to point it out to the boys – they did not get that excited as they had seen enough in the Everglades.

Week 24 – New Orleans, LA to St. Martinsville, LA

February 25, 2005 –

Continued to rain for most of the night – but by morning the rain had quit – but was still threatening. Dad said that after all the spicy food he had yesterday and after a few minutes in the bathroom this morning, he knew why the Cajun’s yelled the way they did (whoo whee).

Week 23 – Mobile, AL to Gibson, LA

February 18, 2005:

This time we head about 20 miles east to Mobile, Alabama. The first stop was to the battle ship – USS Alabama – moored just outside of town. Although we had originally only planned this as a brief stop – we ended up spending over three hours touring the various decks of the ship – and the submarine that was also on display. The building that housed a considerable aircraft exhibit was still closed for repairs and trying to recover from the damage that hurricane Ivan did.

Week 22 – St Marks, FL to Robertsdale, AL

February 11, 2005

Up this morning, to cool temperatures as it came close to freezing last night and the sun had not warmed up things yet. On the recommendation of the campground host – went to Perry (25 miles) to try to get our boat motor fixed. The place that he recommended could not get to it for another two weeks – and in turn we were recommended that we go to St. Marks (45 miles the other direction). Proceeded to St. Marks – (partially as we were planning to go there at some point anyhow) – only to discover that this marina would not have time to look at it for a month. Guess we will have to continue to look elsewhere for a less busy repair shop.

Week 21 – Everglade City – Ecofina River State Park

February 4, 2005

Awoke this morning to a cool and overcast sky – with a light mist / rain falling. Packed up the RV and headed a couple of miles down the road to the Skunk Ape Research Headquarters’ and Campground (for those of you who are wondering a Skunk Ape is believed to be related to our Sasquatch). Anyhow, Jack drove in as we were getting out of the motor home (he was still in his bare feet) and got the WiFi turned on for Dad – while the others went on a guided tour of the menagerie of birds and animals that they have.

Week 20 – Florida Everglades – Big Cypress National Reserve

January 28, 2005

Into Florida City to take the computer in (back about 10 miles from the entrance of the Everglades) and to be back to the campground so that we could do the “Wet Walk” by 2:00. – Easy right – not.

Week 19 – Moore Haven – Everglades National Park – Florida Keys

January 21, 2005 –

Decided to forgo the breakfast at the campground this morning and the kids concentrated on getting their schoolwork completed. This afternoon went into Clewiston – to see their small museum and a video on the sugar cane process – since the kids couldn’t take the tour. The highway was busy as this was the last day of the bass fishing tournament – and there were those staying around for the awards and prize money – and those on the road, as they did not do well enough. (Those that did not do well here – were moving on to the next location early so that they could scout out the best spots – in order to do better in the next tournament).

Week 18 – Kissimmee – Moore Haven, FL

January 14, 2005 –

Well the rain started about 5:30 this morning – and came down hard until about 8:30 when Mickey decided to wake up and bless us with his presence – poor boy must have needed his sleep. He did more rollercoaster type rides yesterday than he has done in all his previous years – and even wanted to repeat Space Mountain without encouragement from anyone else.
